Sila Devi Temple – One of the famous temples in Amber Fort Palace Jaipur

Shila Devi Temple is the famous idol of Durga. Her temple is located in Amer Fort in Jaipur, India  The idol was brought by Raja Man Singh I of Amber from Jessore. Navratri’s special prayers are offered to their goddess on the sixth day of winter.

This small but elegant temple is situated on the right side of the jalebi chowk, known as the Shila Devi temple. The goddess instructed king man Singh, in a dream, to recover her image from the seabed and install and worship it.

After winning the battle of Bengal in 1604, the king recovered the idol from the sea, installed it in the temple, and called it the Shila Devi temple.

A practice associated with this temple is the religious rites of animal sacrifice during the days of “Navratri.

The method was to sacrifice buffalo and goats on the 8th day of Navratri in front of the temple.

But this practice was banned under the law in 1975, after which it was held within the palace grounds in Jaipur strictly as a private event for the royal family.

However, the practice has now been completely stopped at the temple premises.

Second Courtyard

The second courtyard houses the diwan-i-aam. As the name suggests, the king held the audience to hear and receive public petitions.

It is situated up the central stairway of the first-level courtyard, built with a double row of columns.

It is a raised platform with 27 colonnades. Each mounted with an elephant-shaped capital with galleries above it.

Third Courtyard

The third yard was the private quarters for the family of the Maharaja and his attendants. This courtyard is entered by Ganesh Pol and is embellished with mosaics and sculptures.

The courtyard has two buildings opposite one another, separated by a garden in the fashion of Mughal gardens.

The building to the left of the entrance gate is the Jai Mandir, beautifully embellished with glass inlaid panels and multi-mirrored mirrors.

The fourth yard is where the royal families, including the mistresses, lived. The courtyard consists of many rooms where the queens resided and were visited by the king at his choice without being found out which queen he attended, as all the rooms open into common corridors.

The queen’s mother and the king’s companion, including their female attendants, lived near this part of the palace in Janani.
