Count Felix de Vecchi was an accomplished painter, decorated war hero, and explorer who played an important role in liberating Milan as part of the National Guard from Austria during the Unification of Italy.
He travelled around India, Egypt, and The Middle East during his youth and published a book that got sold very well. The album included drawings of his entire experiences throughout his travelling.
In the year 1844, Count Felix de Vecchi married Carolina Franchetti di, Ponte. And after that, both embarked on their journey. It tour took both of them to all the regions of Italy. During their trip, he continued to paint and even write about his adventures.
And when he returned with his wife to his place, he became a celebrity for his romantic representations.
He commissioned architect Alessandro Sidioli in 1854 to build a summer retreat inspired by the architecture from the Eastern Worlds, which he had visited in his youth.
His summer retreat building was constructed with all the modern features of that time, like indoor plumbing, a dumbwaiter, hot water pipes, and a large pressurized outdoor fountain.
His summer retreat house got decorated internally with friezes and frescoes. A large fireplace and a grand piano were featured in its main living room.
The Count got seriously ill in the early 1860s with a chronic liver disorder, and he spent the last few months of his life between his properties in Milan and Corte nova, caring for his children and painting.
At the age of 46, The Count died in Milan from liver failure. He left his wealth and land and gave the care of his two children in the hands of his brother, Diego.
Villa de Vecchi
Count Felix De Vecchi commissioned architect Alessandro Sidioli in 1854 to build a summer retreat inspired by the architecture of the Eastern Worlds, which he had visited in his youth.
Before the building could get completed, the architect, Alessandro Sidioli, passed away. At this point, the legend starts to take shape.
According to the people surrounding the Red House, Count Felix de Vecchi and his family shared a handful and beautiful happy summers at the Villa.
One night in 1862, Count Felix de Vecchi was not at home, and all those happy times ended; when he came to his house, he found that his wife had been brutally murdered, and his daughter was missing.
He tried a lot to find his missing daughter, but he failed to see her. That all drives him to take his own life even less than a year. Some say it was a revenge attack meant for him because he supported Unification, but no one got arrested for this crime. It remains a mystery.
Count’s brother, Biago, became the new owner of the Red House. The ownership of the house remained in the family until the outbreak of World War 2. After that, the house’s property fell into different families’ hands until the house was abandoned during the 1960s.
Count Felix de Vecchi commissioned the building of the Red House, who wished to take advantage of the thermal springs which can get found, but he was a widower by that time, so he employed Alessandro Sidioli.
