The West Virginia Penitentiary is a Gothic-style prison located in Moundsville, West Virginia. Was now withdrawn from the prison and it got operated from 1876 to 1995.

At present, this site remains as a tourist attraction and training facility.

Moundsville Penitentiary Haunted House

In 1863, the story of Moundsville’s penance begins when West Virginia settled in the North with the Union.

The newly formed state needed a prison, and the proximity to the then capital city whaling made the small village of Moundsville the right place.

Located on the stream banks of the Ohio River, the name of the city of Moundsville has got taken from many Indian Eden dunes, which are more than a millennium.

It seems that this area was a place for death before the austerity on the West Virginia skyline.

Life within the walls of the West Virginia Penitentiary was difficult.

During his 119-year history, Moundsville received the dubious honour of being on the list of the top ten most violent improvement facilities in the United States Department of Justice.

The prisoners were rarely safe inside these stone walls. Below is one of the most notorious rooms on the campus.

Prisoners knew the prisoners’ entertainment room as “The Sugar Shake.” It is where illegal activities like gambling, fighting, rape, and murder took place.

Like many prisons, West Virginia Penitentiary had its social hierarchy between prisoners. The prisoners had ways to help each other, but there were ways to deal with rats among them.

Inmate number 44670, which is R.D. Known by the name of the wall, there was a snatch, which faced the final punishment at the hands of fellow prisoners.

On October 8, 1929, Wall was going to jail in the intestines, where boilers were kept on the jumping by three other prisoners. Men cut loose shovelling on the RD wall.

When they got finished, the wall got packed in pieces. He is only one of 36 murders to be here. The wall in jail gets soon connected to a ghost report.

Between 1899 and 1949, 85 men got hanged in the peninsula. This practice often gathers crowds of locals who come to see condemnation.

However, the method of hanging was sentenced to cruel and unusual punishment in 1951, because the state had reviewed some prisoner hanging, in which a prisoner got unknowingly imprisoned.

The last person got hanged on February 25, 1949, in the bathing Pietersen, Enamel County of Logan County. He got convicted of killing a woman on a poker loan.

After his sentence got completed, Peterson’s family refused to claim the dead, so he was buried in the Peninsular Graveyard, where many other unwanted corpses also found their last resting place.

In 1951, a prisoner named Paul Glenn was asked to make an electric chair to carry out future events. The chair called “Old Sparky” is still on display here.

In 1965, the state of West Virginia was finally killed by electrocution for nine more prisoners before the death penalty got commenced.
