Nahargarh Fort | Pride Of Jaipur’s Historical Sites

Nahargarh is a hill fort in Rajasthan, India, near Jaipur. It was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, the ruler of Amber (a princely state in pre-colonial India), in 1734 after he moved his capital from Amer to Jaipur.

Built on a steep hill, it is surrounded by a wall that, in the shape of an irregular polygon, encloses buildings at different levels. You can get into the fort, about 1,000 feet (300 meters) above the city, through three gates.

The nearby hill fort named Balathal was also built by Jai Singh I, who then called it “Nahargarh.” Both forts have the same architectural style. Nahargarh means a fort of tigers, and Balathal means a fort of cows.
