Five things to check before buying industrial shelving

Between the many different choices and all the things you have to take into consideration, it can be daunting choosing the right shelving for your warehouse or industrial shelving.

Here, we will focus on the things you should check before buying any kind of shelving to help you later choose the shelves themselves. Here are five things to consider first.

Shelving

1. Space, size and mobility

First, you have to consider the space you have and the type of industrial shelving that you will need to fit it. Luckily, there are shelves that are easily adjustable to fit your needs. Some of the types of shelving include boltless rivet shelving, push-back racking shelves, pallet-racking, mobile shelving, etc.

Considering how many choices there are on the market, with a little bit of research you are sure to find the right ones to fit the space you have.

When it comes to mobility there are even adjustable shelves that will be helpful if you need to move them later for any reason.

2. Assembly

Assembly may be at the bottom of your list of things to consider but it does come with its own set of worries. Unless you are using a boltless type, industrial shelving will only require a rubber mallet and elbow grease to assemble.

If you are working to a deadline or need something assembled as quickly as possible upon arrival then you may want to take into consideration how time-consuming the assembly of your chosen shelves will be.

3.Types of decking and weight limits

Be aware of the type of decking that you are buying and its limitations. Depending on what you plan to store, not all industrial shelving options will be appropriate.

For example, shelves made from chipboard will not be suitable to store wet or cold things as they can degrade over time. For such storage needs, you may want to consider a steel industrial shelving option.

The other thing to consider is the weight limit that your decking can hold.  You do not need to have the exact weight of everything that you are going to store on the shelves but making a rough calculation can help you decide on the most suitable shelves.

If you expect heavier items then weaker shelves may give under the weight and consequently damage your products.

4. Budget

It is great to consider all the points we have already mentioned but they may mean nothing if they don’t fit your budget.  However, there are enough options on the market to make it easy for you to find something suitable.

Try not to prioritize price too much over quality as you may have to buy twice if you don’t get the best thing the first time.

5. Safety regulations

Lastly, when buying an industrial shelving system, make sure that it is up to code. This will ensure the quality as well. What you should look for is: are they built to meet relevant safety regulations; are they made with the right materials for this model and make, and are they appropriate for the type of storage?
