History of Panna Meena ka Kund: 

Panna Meena ka Kund, Jaipur, is a 16th-century Stepwell built during the reign of Raja Man Singh I. This Stepwell was needed because water was scarce in the dry land around the Amber Fort area. 

Raja Man Singh, I commissioned the Stepwell in 1522 AD as a water source for Amber Fort residents and soldiers. ‘Panna’ and ‘Meena’ refer to the architects who designed and constructed this octagonal-shaped Stepwell. The well is named after them. 

For many years, the Stepwell provided water and relief from heat to kings, queens, and people. Its beautiful carvings and designs showcase excellent craftsmanship that has endured through time.

Unlike the more common square or rectangular Stepwell designs, Panna Meena ka Kund, Jaipur, has a unique octagonal shape. It was specially constructed to fit the contours of the land and provide maximum storage capacity. 

The Stepwell has eight walls and is five stories deep. Many steps lead down to the water at the bottom of the well. The stairs, walls, pillars, and columns are all stone and feature intricate carvings of floral motifs, latticework, or jaali. 

The carvings at the well blend Mughal and Rajputana styles, demonstrating cultural connections during Raja Man Singh’s time. Panels depict traditional arts and Hindu mythological figures such as gods and animals.
